Filipina nurse seized, raped in Libya

A Filipina nurse was kidnapped and raped by unknown gunmen while in captivity in the Libyan capital of Tripoly, medics and security officials said.

The woman was seized early in the morning as she was on her way to work, said the health ministry spokesman, and was released several hours later after suffering an unspecified "aggression".

Medics and security services later added the abductors held the nurse "for several hours and raped her."

Arab News quoted health ministry statement that the incident could push the Philippines government to speed up the evacuation of its citizens, 3,000 of whom work in Libya as doctors and nurses, as the country sinks further into chaos amid fighting between Islamist fighters and allied militiamen.

Other countries including Portugal, the Netherlands, Canada and Bulgaria, have already evacuated their citizens or closed their embassies in Tripoli earlier this week. [via Source here, here]
