Filipino nurse removed from UK NMC register for offering 'chikynini'

A Filipino nurse was struck off the register of Nursing and Midwifery Council for asking a colleague if he could give kiss her breasts.

In a report over Wales Online, 54-year-old Miguel Gabarda from the Philippines told a care assistant that she was "beautiful" and had "lovely eyes".

He then asked her he could give her a "chikynini" - the Filipino word for a love bite, and pointed at her breasts during his rounds at a care home.

The care assistant related at the the hearing:

"My uniform was rubbing on my neck and had given me a red mark. Mr Gabarda asked me if it was a love bite. I said it wasn't but he said it was disrespectful in his country to have a love bite in a visible area. He said they are given on the chest. He then asked if he could give me a "chikynini" and pointed at my breasts.

"I asked him what the word "chikynini" meant and he said it was a 'love kiss'. It was the first time I had ever heard the word. I tried to laugh and walk off."

The young woman had only been working at the Merton Place Nursing Home in Conwy, North Wales, for eight months when she claims Gabarda sexually harassed her.

She said: "He was very forward, unprofessional and very inappropriate. He made me feel very uncomfortable when all I wanted was to do my job."

Gabarda was found to have carried out three sexually motivated incidents at the Merton Place Nursing Home in 2012.

He also kissed a colleague on the side of the neck while working at Bryn Marl Nursing Home, in Conwy, North Wales.

Gabarda denied all the allegations but was found guilty of professional misconduct at the Nursing and Midwifery Council hearing in Cardiff. It ruled that his fitness to practice was impaired.

Chair Lucinda Barnett told Gabarda they believed there was a risk of him repeating his actions.

Ms Barnett said: "There is an attitudinal problem, that you lack full insight and that there is a significant risk of repeating the behaviour.

"Public interest can only be saved by a finding of impairment. Your fitness to practice is currently impaired by reason of your misconduct."

She said Gabarda's failure to maintain clear sexual boundaries required him to be struck off.
