Canada to use NCLEX starting January 2015

Starting November 3, 2014, nurses who want to be licensed and work in Canada will be required to take the NCLEX which will be administered starting January 5, 2015.

NCLEX or National Council Licensure Examination is a computer adaptive test administered for nurses who want to work in the United States and its territories. It is administered worldwide by PearsonVue.

Canada has decided to do away with their current CRNE test for licensure, and is now in the transition stage for the implementation of NCLEX as one of licensure requirement in the following provinces/territories:
  • Alberta
  • British Columbia
  • Manitoba
  • New Brunswick
  • Newfoundland & Labrador
  • Northwest Territories & Nunavut
  • Nova Scotia
  • Ontario
  • Prince Edward Island
  • Saskatchewa

For internationally-educated nurses, Canada has also introduce the NNAS assessment of education and licensure starting August 12, 2014.

Here's some initial information on NCLEX in Canada:
  • Registration for NCLEX starts November 3, 2014
  • First administration on January 5, 2015
  • Exam will be administered by PearsonVue, with content same as in US.
  • Test fee is at $360 CDN, plus $150 CDN if you take the test outside the US.
